EADS CASA Completes Ground Testing On ARBS Boom

Will Be Used On Australian KC-30 Tankers

EADS CASA tells ANN it has successfully completed the refueling Ground Test with the ARBS (Air Refueling Boom System) installed on the A310 platform.

The refueling operation was performed using the real aircraft systems and a F-16 fighter aircraft receptacle connected to the fuel pipes. Several transfers were made through the Boom Control Unit. All modes were tested -- automatic and manual connection and refueling, and all systems performed well.

Following this test, EADS CASA will complete the Flight Test Program with the A310 platform, including dry and wet contacts.

The new Air Refueling Boom System (ARBS) will be outfitted throughout the fleet of five EADS A330 MRTT (KC-30B) tanker aircraft ordered by the Royal Australian Air Force.

EADS touts the KC-30B as the most advanced mission system tanker aircraft in the world. The centerline ARBS (Air Refueling Boom System), with a maximum nominal fuel flow rate of 1,200 US gallons per minute and with fly-by-wire controls, also features an automatic load alleviation system that provides a larger refueling envelope and enhanced controllability, plus two under-wing hose and drogue pods with a maximum nominal fuel flow rate of 420 US gallons per minute.

The Multi-Role Tanker Transport, based on the Airbus A330-200 commercial airliner, also features troop-carrying and cargo transport capabilities.
