AIAA Launches Search For New Executive Director

Maj. Gen. Robert S. Dickman, U.S. Air Force (Ret) Stepping Down After Eight Years

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has begun a search for a new executive director to replace Maj. Gen. Robert S. Dickman, U.S. Air Force (retired), who is retiring after eight years of service as executive director of AIAA. The search is expected to be completed by October 2012.

AIAA President Michael Griffin said, “During Bob’s tenure AIAA grew in strategic areas including corporate membership, international outreach, and an increased focus on the next generation of aerospace professionals, with membership in each of these areas increasing. He initiated transformative change efforts to grow the Institute’s relevance and to expand AIAA’s position into areas of nontraditional aerospace missions. We thank him for his outstanding leadership and wish him well in his retirement.”

The executive director serves as the primary interface with AIAA’s president and board of directors, and is a key leader of the Institute. Among the executive director’s responsibilities are the effective management of AIAA and the AIAA Foundation, providing strategic leadership, fiscal responsibility, and program administration in keeping with the guidance and directives of the elected members of the Institute’s board of directors. The new executive director will lead a major effort to grow, diversify, and engage the membership of AIAA through innovative programs, conferences, technical activities, publications, and educational programs, as well as to lead international expansion efforts, public policy discussions, and standards activities, while ensuring optimal financial performance and Institute operations. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated and notable achievements in the fields of aeronautics or astronautics.
