Independence Air Takes Off

Service From Dulles To Five Cities

Independence is in the air.

Atlantic Coast's low-cost spin-off initiated a minimal schedule Wednesday, taking on paying customers for the first time. Based at Dulles Airport (VA), the airline is serving five cities including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Newark and Raleigh-Durham.

Independence Chairman and CEO Kerry Skeen says he's aware of the low-cost carrier competition at Dulles, but think's there's plenty of room for his airline, which operated short-haul flights for both United and Delta.

"The Washington market was one of the most expensive in the country, and people are screaming for low fares," he said.

Independence is operating with an initial fleet of 11 aircraft. Skeen says his company will increase that number to 87 as aircraft now in United Express livery are repainted and retasked.
