Walton's Ultralight Had A History

Hard Landing Noted On Journey From Virginia To Jackson Hole

The eleventh-richest man in the world was flying an ultralight that had a recent history of damage when he was killed in a mishap near Jackson Hole, WY, Sunday.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports Walton had just purchased the CGS Hawk Arrow and had flown it to Jackson Hole. The News & Guide quoted unnamed sources who said the ultralight suffered a hard landing, dropping 30 feet to the ground -- in Nebraska on the flight to Jackson Hole. The drop reportedly damaged the landing gear,

Those same sources told the paper that Walton trucked the aircraft from the site of the hard landing to Jackson Hole, where it was repaired. The flight in which Walton -- a Wal-Mart board member and noted philanthropist -- died Monday, was the first for the aircraft since it had been repaired by Walton himself.

At first, the NTSB decided not to investigate. The National Forest Service, which operates the Grand Teton National Forest, was the lead agency. That decision was later reversed, as ANN reported in real-time on Tuesday.
