Germany's Second Busiest Airport Closed By Bomb Threats

On Europe's Busiest Travel Weekend Of The Year

Federal German border police, backed by bomb-sniffing dogs, scoured the Duesseldorf airport Sunday, after several airlines and the airport itself received telephoned bomb threats. The airport had been shutdown and air travel from the German city completely disrupted.

The number of threatening calls totaled seven at last count. Terminals were evacuated as authorities searched for signs of explosives. They found none. More than 150 flights carrying at least 150,000 passengers were affected. The airport finally reopened after a thorough search of the terminals and outbuilding. The search alone took more than seven hours.

It's one of the busiest travel weekends of the year in Europe, as passengers return from their annual summer sojourns (yeah, Europeans get a lot more time off than Americans). Sunday was the last day before schools in many European countries begin the fall term.
