Three Hurt As NWA 747 Gear Collapses

Incident Forces Closure Of Guam's International Airport

Three people aboard Northwest Airlines Flight 74, a Boeing 747-200, were injured Friday when the nosegear of the aircraft collapsed shortly after landing.

The 325 passengers and 16 crewmembers used emergency chutes to evacuate the aircraft, which remained nose-down on a taxiway adjascent to the main runway, according to news reports.

"Three people were injured. I don't know the extent of the injuries, but one passenger was taken to the naval hospital," Guam Governor Felix Camacho told reporters. He was quoted by Reuters. The airport was closed after Friday's incident, forcing JAL to reroute or cancel a number of flights to the US territory.

It was the second incident this week involving the landing gear on a Boeing 747. As ANN reported Wednesday, the gear of a United Airlines 747 collapsed at SFO while the aircraft was undergoing maintenance. No one was hurt in that incident.
