NASA To Welcome Columbus Next Week

Module Headed To ISS In 2007

A European named Columbus will soon begin a journey to America... where it will receive a warm welcome from the folks at NASA.

It's the Columbus module -- the European Space Agency's contribution to the International Space Station. The research laboratory will arrive at Kennedy Space Center nest week... and is scheduled for blastoff to the station on a future shuttle mission, sometime in 2007.

As Aero-News reported last month, during Columbus' planned 10-year operational lifetime, scientific researchers in Europe -- with the help of the astronauts onboard Columbus and a Europe-wide support infrastructure on the ground -- will be able to conduct a vast program of experiments in the areas of the life and physical sciences, materials science, fundamental physics and technology research.

The module is the ESA's primary contribution to the International Space Station.
