Moscow-based Russian leasing company, Ilyushin Finance Co. (IFC), has signed a purchase agreement to acquire 32 Bombardier CS300 aircraft and options for an additional 10 CS300 aircraft. The transaction, which follows a letter of intent signed by IFC in 2011, is subject to approval by the company’s shareholders.

NASA Releases Glory Taurus XL Launch Failure Report Summary

Satellite Was To Have Assisted In Climate Research

NASA has released a summary report on findings from a panel that investigated the unsuccessful 2011 launch of the agency's Glory spacecraft. The satellite, designed to improve our understanding of Earth's climate, was lost March 4, 2011, when it failed to reach orbit after launch aboard an Orbital Sciences Corp. Taurus XL rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Says Airlines Want To Lower The Cost-Per-Seat On Existing Routes

An Airbus executive says that the company thinks airlines will begin looking at larger aircraft as they seek to lower their cost-per-seat on existing routes. Airbus' director for strategic marketing and analysis Andrew Gordon said in an interview in Helsinki that there has been an "upscaling" in the airplanes that are being sold.

Baton Rouge Community College A&P Program Hopes To Be Open By Fall

But Still Under Review By FAA Two Years After Its Planned Launch

An A&P program at Baton Rouge Community College in Louisiana hopes to be able to open in time for the fall term, but for now, it's still under review by the FAA. The program has been in the works since 2010, when it was announced by the school. At that time, officials said they hoped to have the program in a position to accept students by 2011 ... but that hasn't yet happened.

Simplex Receives EASA Approval For Eurocopter Cleaning And De-icing System

European Agency Validates FAA STC

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has completed the validation of the FAA's STC for the Simplex Model 510 powerline insulator and windmill cleaning and de-icing system. EASA has granted certification (EASA # 10043539) for installation and operation on AS 350 and AS 355 series aircraft. Simplex received an FAA STC for the Model 510 in December of 2011.

Rolls-Royce Completes T56 Engine Enhancement Testing

Upgraded Powerplants For The C-130 Fleet

The USAF, in conjunction with Rolls-Royce, has completed the final element of testing for the Series 3.5 enhancement for the T56 engine, leading to military qualification and FAA certification later this year. Accelerated Mission Testing (AMT) was successfully completed ahead of schedule last month and proved the durability of the new blades, vanes and other parts of the T56 engine over a period of 400 hours and 1,000 cycles.

Will Power Bombardier CSeries Aircraft

Transport Canada has granted type certification to Pratt & Whitney for its first PurePower Geared Turbofan engine – the PW1500G engine that will power Bombardier's CSeries aircraft. Pratt & Whitney has conducted over 4,000 hours of rigorous engine testing since the initial engine began testing in September 2010. The PW1500G engine test program included 340 hours of flight testing on P&W's experimental 747 Flight Test airplane.

The first person to fly as a tourist in space has set his sights on a goal well beyond low Earth orbit. Dennis Tito, who in 2001 became the first person to pay for the privilege of flying aboard a Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station, said in a news release that he has founded a new non-profit organization "The Inspiration Mars Foundation," and that he hopes to launch a manned mission to Mars in 2018.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has relayed new images that confirm it has successfully obtained the first sample ever collected from the interior of a rock on another planet. No rover has ever has drilled into a rock beyond Earth and collected a sample from its interior. Transfer of the powdered-rock sample into an open scoop was visible for the first time in images received Wednesday at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA.
