Canadian Government Takes Action It Says Will Enhance Air Safety

TAWS Required On Turbine And Commercial Aircraft With Six Or More Passenger Seats

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Canada's Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, announced new regulations Wednesday designed to improve aviation safety in Canada. The new regulations require private turbine-powered and commercial airplanes with six or more passenger seats to be equipped with an alert system known as the "terrain awareness and warning system" (TAWS).

Joins With Boeing To Ask FAA For Extension

Following the discovery of cracks on two Boeing 717s, the planemaker and Southwest Airlines have asked the FAA for additional time to inspect the 717s owned by AirTran, which Southwest recently acquired in a merger. Boeing is not saying what airline is flying the airplanes on which the cracks were discovered, but only AirTran and Hawaiian Airlines operate the model.
