Parachutist Jumps From Tethered Hot-Air Balloon

Operators Were Not Expecting The Valentine's Day Stunt

A person who had booked a ride in a tethered hot-air balloon for Valentine's Day surprised the other passengers by climbing over the gondola's safety net, unrolling a hidden parachute, and launching himself into the air 300 feet above the ground.

It is reportedly the first such incident at Irvine’s Great Park in Southern California. The concession is called the Great Park Balloon.

The online publication "The Digital Journal" reports that the man landed safely, gathered up his 'chute, and leaped over a fence where a car with its engine running was waiting. The jumper and the driver of the car fled the scene before authorities could catch up to them.

Craig Reem is spokesman for the City of Irvine, CA. He said the jump may have violated FAA regulations against skydiving over congested areas.
