Al-Qaida Claims Credit For September UPS 747 Downing

U.S. Says No Evidence The Group Was Involved

Yemen-based al-Qaida on the Arabian Peninsula has claimed credit for bringing down a UPS 747 in Saudi Arabia in September, though there is no direct evidence linking the terrorist organization to the accident.

The Associated Press reports that the splinter group also says it was responsible for last week's failed mail bomb attempt.

A U.S. government official said that there is no reason to believe that the UPS accident was caused by a bomb. The investigation is focusing on a fire which apparently broke out on the main cargo deck of the airplane. The cause of that fire has yet to be determined.
