Ingenuous Tool Lets You Create Any Size Hose Clamp Out Of
Safety Wire
If you any machine that uses hoses for any sort of fluids,
chances are you know what a hose clamp looks like. If you perform
any kind of maintenance on any of these items, you also know how
frustrating it can be to have to stop what you are doing and head
to the hardware store to find that one size of hose clamp that you
don't have. Even if you find the right size, you may not find the
right type of clamp!
Hunting through the vendor tents at Lakeland, we ran into a very
interesting little tool that appears to address this situation
quite nicely.
The tool is called the "ClampTite" and is a deceptively simple
solution to the hose clamp problem which not only resolves it but
allows you to do away with the hose clamp entirely!
The ClampTite tool provides a means for tightening wires wrapped
around an object and then locking it in place. The tool can be used
with various wire sizes, which eliminate space and strength issues
often encountered with screw-operated worm gear type clamps. Now,
you might think that you could do this with safety-wire pliers, but
it is not quite the same.
To use the tool, you must first measure the amount of safety
wire needed to produce the clamping effect. That is done by taking
some string and wrapping it around the hose four times. Unwind the
string, and the amount used to wrap around the hose is the amount
of safety wire needed. The gauge of the safety wire is selected
from a table of recommended use, and the manufacturer suggests
using stainless steel wire for corrosion resistance.
Creation of the clamp is done in three or four steps, depending
on whether you want a single- or double-strand clamp. The tool
comes in different sizes and different metals, from aluminum to
stainless steel.
