Student Pilot Lands In Florida Residential Neighborhood

Said GPS Told Him Subdivision Street Was Nearby Airport

A student pilot made what was described as a "hard landing" on a residential street in Pasco County, Florida near Tampa Tuesday. The 22-year-old pilot of a Cirrus SR20 told sheriff's deputies that his GPS indicated that the street was Pilot Country Airport (X05), which is actually about three miles from the Pasco Trails subdivision where he landed.

The airplane, which had departed from Sanford, FL, hit some mailboxes, small trees, and a fence as it landed, according to Tampa television station WTSP. A neighbor who witnessed the landing told the station that the pilot appeared to be Chinese and did not speak English well. The witness said the pilot insisted the street was Pilot County. "We land here all the time," the pilot reportedly said.

The neighbor corrected him, saying he had landed in a horse community. "You got them mixed up," he told the pilot.

No one was injured in the incident.
