Cormorant Accident Investigation Complete

But No Word Yet On Possible Cause

Canadian military investigators have finished their probe into last month's crash of a Cormorant helicopter off the coast of Canso. Three of the seven crew members on board were killed in that watery crash, and four others were injured.

Now, investigators are writing up their findings... though they're not yet ready to say when it'll be submitted to Ottawa.

"A draft report has been brought together by the various investigators working together as a team," said board spokesperson Captain Christine Bazarin to the Halifax Herald.

The Cormorant -- a variant of the AgustaWestland EH101 -- was on a training mission, practicing hoisting maneuvers above a fishing boat, when witnesses say it banked hard and dove nose-first into the sea. Conditions were reportedly clear and calm at the time.

The board of inquiry has been looking at the equipment involved, as well as training and search and rescue methods.

Canadian-flown Cormorants were pulled from service for a short time after the accident. But a flight safety investigation found no systemic mechanical problems with the aircraft and they were soon restored to service.
