Peru Takes Delivery Of Two Mi-35 Attack Helos

Will Be Deployed In Anti-Drug And Anti-Terrorist Roles

The Russian government has delivered a pair of Mi-35 Hind E attack helicopters to Peru, which will deploy the aircraft in anti-narcotics and anti-terrorism missions.

The deliveries were part of a $108-million contract signed between the two governments last year. Russia agreed to deliver six Mi-171 Hip H helos along with the Mi-35s. The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports that the first of the multi-role helicopters will arrive in Peru in May.

The Hinds were shipped to South America disassembled aboard an An-124 transport plane.

The aircraft will fly primarily in the Apurimac and Ene river valleys, which have been declared military operation zones since August of 2009. The group Sendero Luminoso, which is regarded by Peru, the U.S., and the EU as a terrorist organization, operates in that area, and is believed to have strong ties to drug traffickers.
