American Legend Aircraft Company Delivers First 'Smart Cub'

Classic Design With A Garmin G3X Glass Panel

The first G3X-equipped Legend Smart Cub has been delivered to a customer in Massachusetts, American Legend Aircraft Company announced Monday.

Rick Brown, a pilot who enjoys flying for recreation, particularly sightseeing opportunities afforded by the islands around Cape Cod, will base his Legend Smart Cub at Falmouth Airpark, the only residential airpark in the state of Massachusetts.

The Legend Cub is a certified sport aircraft similar to the classic Piper Cub and powered by a 100-horsepower Continental motor. The new Garmin G3X is a multifunction "glass cockpit" display system featuring sophisticated electronics. American Legend Aircraft says the combination of the Legend Cub and Garmin G3X uniquely blends advanced, proven technologies in aircraft design.

Brown has previously owned a Cessna Skylane, and says he chose the Legend Cub for its low-and-slow capabilities and its ability to fly with both left and right, doors and windows open. "You spend a lot of time flying low, in class G airspace, and avoiding terrain and clouds," he said following his 18-plus-hour flight from KSLR (Sulphur Springs) to 5B6 (Falmouth). "Having all the navigation, terrain, and weather on screen was really nice, including traffic when nearing an airport. I knew the Legend Cub was a great airplane. The marriage of a great airplane with all the capability of the G3X results in an airplane that's really fun to fly and very capable in lots of situations and flight conditions."

Garmin G3X Display

The Garmin G3X packs a wealth of information into a large screen display. This unit combines full primary flight display, such as attitude/directional guidance, along with electronic engine monitoring and detailed moving-map capabilities. Features like terrain, traffic, weather, airport diagrams, and synthetic vision give pilots the most complete set of information available, rivaling most modern business jets. The Garmin G3X-equipped Legend Smart Cub also offers redundant display of airspeed, altimeter, and tachometer, plus a Garmin radio and transponder.

Kurt Sehnert, GM of American Legend Aircraft Company, said, "This is an exciting announcement for American Legend. We have always been on the forefront of offering the latest in avionics in the Legend Cub. Our hard work on the Garmin G3X-equipped Legend Smart Cub matches our customers' excitement to fly with these capabilities. The ability to fly at night and make use of real-time display of weather, terrain, METARs, NOTAMs, PIREPs, traffic, and more is extraordinary in a Cub." Sehnert added, "Flying a Legend Cub with the Garmin G3X-combines superior situational awareness, AND unmatched enjoyment."
