VNY Aviators Launch Collection Drive For The Homeless

Public Encouraged To Show Some Heart This Valentine's Day

This Valentine's Day, flight crews and employees at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) are launching a four-week campaign to collect travel-size gifts from the heart for the homeless. The second annual "Caring Counts" campaign, sponsored by Clay Lacy Aviation, asks airport employees and community members to donate mini soaps, shampoos, lotions and other personal hygiene items for distribution to local poverty agencies.

"Through this campaign, we hope to demonstrate that even a small act of kindness can bring great comfort to individuals and families in need," said Clay Lacy Aviation President Brian Kirkdoffer. "This is a simple, yet meaningful, way for pilots, flight crews and travelers to help bring dignity and hope to the most impoverished members of our community."

Imprinted with the message, "Sometimes the Greatest Gifts Come in Travel-Size Packages," flyers and collection boxes are located at workplaces throughout the airport. The public can drop off donations through March 11 at the Van Nuys FlyAway Bus Terminal lobby at 7610 Woodley Ave; parking is free in the 30-minute passenger drop-off area.

Soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant, hand and body lotion, brushes and combs, and disposable razors are among the items being collected to benefit MEND (Meet Each Need With Dignity) and San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, who provide bathing facilities, clean clothing and warm meals for the homeless.

Collection drive partners include Van Nuys Airport, Pentastar Aviation, TWC Aviation, Syncro Aircraft Interiors, Inc. and the Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn Hotel.
