F-16 Down Near Baghdad

A USAF F-16, currently identified as an F-16CG, has gone down over Iraq, as confirmed by onsite military officials.

The aircraft went down some 20 miles NW of Baghdad, in Anbar Province. Local news reports say the pilot died after ejecting from the stricken plane.

The aircraft went down Monday, at approximately 1335 local time, and appeared to pitch up and down  repeatedly prior to impact, according to an Iraqi witness, Mohammed Al-Obeidi, who lives nearby in Karmah.

The aircraft impacted in a farm and sketchy reports indicate that the aircraft was carrying only one airman.

The aircraft was involved in support of coalition ground forces at the time of the accident. The accident site was immediately overflown and has had a number of warplanes circling while recovery operations are undertaken.
