Central Florida Airport Opts Out Of TSA Screening

But Washington Officials Say Guidelines Must Be Followed

Orlando Sanford Airport (KSFB) in central Florida says it will opt out of TSA screening in favor of a private contractor, but that may not end the controversy.

Sanford Airport Authority Director Larry Dale says his research shows that the private firm is "the way to go," according to radio station WDBO. Dale said he will formally request the opt out by letter, and will go with one of five private companies authorized to perform airport screening.

Dale said the transition should take about a year, but it's not clear if the change will put an end to the use of full body scanners and "enhanced" pat-downs which have become so controversial. TSA says that, even if a private company is providing the screening, its guidelines must be followed. That would include both the scanners and the pat-downs that some have equated with "groping" on the part of the TSOs.
