Benin Crash Caused By Too Much Weight: Government

Foreign Minister Blames Crew For UTA Accident

Benin's foreign minister told reporters in Beirut Tuesday that the crash of a UTA flight off his shores last December was caused by excessive weight on board the aircraft.

The Beirut Daily Star reports Foreign Minister Rogatien Biaou denied that the airport in Cotonou was responsible for the December 2003 accident. He told reporters, "The decision to take off is not in the hands of the airport, but in those of the pilot."

Biaou's remarks came after he met with his counterpart from Lebanon, Foreign Minister Jean Obeid.

More than 100 people died Christmas day when the UTA 727 crashed into the ocean shortly after take-off from Cotonou. Many of the victims were Lebanese vacationers.

Although the official inquiry into the December accident is still underway, Biaou laid blame for the crash at the feet of the flight crew. He said his country had stepped up safety measure for flights to and from Lebanon.
