Joint Strike Fighters Grounded For A Third Time

Integrated Power Package Failed On A Test Aircraft Tuesday

Flight testing has been suspended for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter for a third time after an Integrated Power Package (IPP) failed on aircraft AF-4 during a ground maintenance test run. The failure occurred at about 0830 local time at Edwards AFB in California, according to a statement from the F-35 Program Office.

The union representing pilots for American Airlines is calling for the federal government to proceed with the issuance of new flight- and duty time rules for commercial pilots without any further delay."Congress mandated an August 1, 2011 deadline for the issuance of long-needed revisions to regulations governing airline pilot flight- and duty-time and minimum rest requirements,” said Allied Pilots Association (APA) President Captain David Bates. “To help ensure the safety of the traveling public, these revised regulations must be issued now without further delay."

A scheduled Federal Court directions hearing on the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority's (CASA) application to continue the suspension of Tiger Airways Australia Pty Ltd has been adjourned for a fifth time. A directions hearing was held on Friday, which was adjourned with no resolution of the matter until Thursday, August 11th 2011. An E-Racer experimental aircraft on its first flight nosed over while attempting an off-airport emergency landing on July 31st, fatally injuring the builder/pilot of the airplane. Jack Morrison, 73, was the only person on board the aircraft at the time of the accident.
