Special Purpose DA42 MPP Down In Romania

Box Canyon Crash Kills Three Aboard

ANN has been tracking reports of a DA42 crash for a few days but due to the vagaries of foreign translation and attendant media issues, we have only now confirmed that a special purpose Diamond DA42 Twin-engine aircraft went down in Romania last Wednesday. It is the first known fatal accident involving Diamond's innovative diesel-powered twin, though the cause of the accident appears to be condition/terrain-related rather than airframe-related, as the aircraft was found downed in a box canyon.

One Concern Addressed... Many Others Loom For Owners

It ain't easy being the owner of a Columbia airplane right now... as questions regarding Columbia's very existence surround ongoing ownership talks with Cessna. ANN is happy to report at least one of those questions -- will my avionics still be covered under warranty? -- has an answer, at least for customers flying Columbia Aircraft Manufacturing planes equipped with Garmin avionics.

Aero-News has learned Apical Industries Inc. recently received EASA certification of its Cargo Door Mounted Liferaft Kit for Sikorsky model S-76A/B/C aircraft. FAA certification was received in July 2006 and Transport Canada approval was received in September 2006.

The 787 is safe... or, at least, as safe as conventional airliners... and Boeing's methods for testing that claim are adequate. That is the summary of the FAA's response to assertions made last month by a former Boeing engineer, who claimed the composite-bodied airliner's structure could splinter and burn in a severe crash, causing passenger fatalities in an accident that could be survivable in an aluminum-bodied plane.

Attorney Suing Agency For $10 Million

The past seven days have seen three rulings placing responsibility for fatal aircraft accidents at least partly on the shoulders of air traffic controllers, and the FAA. Now, an attorney is suing the FAA for the loss of three people in a 2004 accident near Pikeville, KY, claiming the actions of an air traffic controller were to blame for the fatal crash.

Endeavour Scheduled To Lift Off September 2008

NASA tells ANN the space agency has assigned the space shuttle crew for Endeavour's STS-126 mission, targeted for launch in September 2008. The flight will deliver equipment to the International Space Station that will enable larger crews to reside aboard the complex.
