Bill Richardson's Still Looking For A Plane

Legislature Approves $5 Million For Just That

New Mexico's Democratic governor, Bill Richardson, is shopping for an aircraft once again and it looks for all the world like he has the backing of the legislature.

State lawmakers have approved $5 million for the purchase of "a Cessna Citation 500 series or comparable" twin jet or turboprop. The aircraft must have been built after 2000 and have fewer than 2,000 total hours on the airframe and engines.

Richardson has been without an aircraft since February when, as ANN reported, his modified 1966 Aero Commander was first grounded, then sold. His administration's attempts to buy another aircraft were thwarted by the state's attorney general when he proposed using highway funds for the purchase.

The Request For Proposals (bid) was sent out December 22nd, several weeks before the legislature convened. General Services Secretary Edward Lopez said he sent out the RFP without a dollar sum in order to get more honest bids. "I didn't want to get locked into having the [$5 million] appropriation become the price for the airplane. I wanted to get the best value possible," Lopez told the Associated Press.
