AOPA Throws The Doors Open

Eleven Hours Of Learning At AOPA Fly-In And Open House

If a good pilot is always learning, then the 14th annual AOPA Fly-In and Open House will be your chance to be a very good pilot. AOPA and the AOPA Air Safety Foundation will offer 11 hours of aviation seminars during the June 5 event at AOPA headquarters in Frederick (MD).

The AOPA Fly-In, held each year at the association's home airport (Frederick Municipal Airport — FDK), has grown to be the largest one-day event of its kind in the nation.

AOPA President Phil Boyer, a pilot with more than 7,000 hours' flight time in everything from two-seat training aircraft to business jets, will hold a question-and-answer session focusing on security challenges facing pilots who fly in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Two seminars will make their Fly-In debut this year. Dr. Ian Fries, a member of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation's governing body, will discuss "How to Save Your Life in an Aircraft Accident." Dr. Fries is a renowned aviation medical advisor and has served as a member of the AOPA Board of Aviation Medical Advisors for more than 20 years.

The AOPA Air Safety Foundation will offer "Maneuvering Flight — Hazardous to Your Health?" for the first time at the Fly-In. "Maneuvering flight is something every pilot does on every flight, without exception," said ASF Executive Director Bruce Landsberg. "This seminar shows clearly that successful maneuvering flight involves both basic airmanship and judgment and offers straight talk that can help save both money and lives."

And fliers and non-fliers alike will enjoy laughing and learning with aviation humorist Rod Machado.

In addition to the seminars, visitors will be able to take self-guided tours of the AOPA headquarters building and meet and chat with AOPA staff members. There will be some three dozen aircraft on static display on AOPA's ramp — and there's a spot reserved for this year's Win-A-Twin Sweepstakes grand prize, a better-than-new 1965 Piper Twin Comanche.

Visitors will also be able to browse through more than 100 vendor exhibits, displaying everything from the latest "gotta have" gadgets to aviation insurance to aircraft financing.

Meet ANN's Jim Campbell and Wes Oleszewski!

The AOPA Fly-In and Open House is free and open to everyone. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. Local vendors will have a variety of food and drinks available for sale. ANN's Jim Campbell will be in attendance, as well as Klyde Morris Cartoonist Wes Oleszewski, in booth 64.
