Another Iraq Crash; Helo Down, 4 Killed

The Italian Army lost a helicopter, to unknown causes, some time Tuesday. Four persons on board were reported to have been killed.

The AB-412 helicopter (file photo, above) crashed about 8 miles southeast of Nasiriya, the southern Iraqi city where most of Italy's 3,000 coalition troops are based. Italy's military contribution to the ongoing coalition is the fourth largest in Iraq, with only the United States, Britain and South Korea having fielded larger forces.

The AB412 is a medium transport helicopter designed for search and rescue, emergency medical support, law enforcement, maritime surveillance and transport missions. The AB412 is a multi-engine Pratt & Whitney PT6T-3D powered helo certified for single pilot IFR ops.

The helo was reportedly returning from Kuwait's International airport, had stopped to refuel at Kuwait's Camp Buehring, and was lost soon after its departure.

A rescue team was dispatched, finding the remains of the aircraft near Iraq's Tallill air base, near Nasiriya. An investigation is underway.
