Two Lost In Extra 300 Downing Near Phoenix

Plane Crashed While Returning To Airport

Two men onboard an Extra 300L aerobatic plane were killed Friday afternoon when their plane went down about seven miles east of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (IWA).

The Arizona Republic reports a crew onboard a nearby medevac helicopter witnessed the plane impact the desert terrain in a nose-down attitude at 1430 PDT, and landed immediately to render aid... but both victims had already succumbed to their injuries.

The men, whose names had not been released as of Friday night, were found 10-20 feet from the primary impact site. One parachute had been deployed. The accident aircraft (file photo of type, above) departed at 1243, and was returning to the airport when it crashed.

The aircraft was owned by Fighter Combat International, based at IWA. The company sells aerobatic rides in its fleet of Extras, or simulated combat flights.
