Hizbollah Fires AAA At Israeli Jets Over Lebanon

No Hits

Lebanon's Hizbollah guerrilla group said its gunners had fired a barrage of anti-aircraft artillery at Israeli warplanes as they overflew south Lebanon Sunday. "The air defence unit of the Islamic resistance confronted...hostile Israeli warplanes that violated Lebanese sovereignty over the central areas of south Lebanon," Hizbollah said in a statement.

The Shi'ite Muslim faction said its gunners later fired at jets over western areas of south Lebanon, where they had also fired at Israeli reconnaissance planes overnight. No planes were reported hit. Earlier this month Israel said three shells landed across the border in northern Israel, including a dud that fell near a school.

UN Worried About Israeli Overflights Of Lebanon

Two months ago, the United Nations expressed concern over an increase in the number of flights by Israeli warplanes over Lebanon. The world body warned that could escalate into a much more serious conflict. Israeli jets regularly fly over Lebanon, drawing anti-aircraft fire from Syrian- and Iranian-backed Hizbollah, which helped expel Israel from south Lebanon in 2000 after a 22-year occupation. The United Nations views both the flights and the retaliatory fire as violations of the terms of Israel's pullout.
