Aero-TV: The Saratoga NX – NexAir Avionics’ First R9 Aircraft

General Manager David Fetherston Introduces NexAir’s Latest Evolution

At the 2009 EAA AirVenture, NexAir Avionics introduced the completely modernized Saratoga successor, the Saratoga NX. Aero-TV caught up with NexAir Avionics’ General Manager, David Fetherston, at the Sport Aviation Expo to get an up-close perspective of the new aircraft. A product of the NexAir Aircraft Integration and Re-engineering (AIR) program, the Saratoga NX is the first to feature the Avidyne Entegra Release 9 IFD.

The Saratoga NX comes standard with Avidyne’s fully-modular FMS900w system featuring dual IFD5000 displays.  To reduce pilot workload and eliminate potential confusion, engineers made significant communication improvements between Avidyne’s FMS/NAV system and Saratoga NX’s STEC 55X autopilot.

Once coupled to the Entegra Release 9 system, the autopilot automatically switches to the proper mode during each phase of flight.  The new avionics panel isn’t the only new interior feature unveiled with the Saratoga NX.  NexAir Avionics redesigned the interior cockpit to include additional soundproofing and leather ergonomic seating for added comfort.

Several improvements have been made to the exterior of the aircraft. NexAir Avionics’ partnered with the engineering experts at LoPresti Aviation to enhance overall aircraft performance.  New LoPresti cowling provides improved engine cowling, while LoPresti WingTips, featuring high-intensity pulse lights, and LoPresti LED beacon light provide improved nighttime taxi, takeoff, and landing operations.

Most significantly, perhaps, is the addition of LoPresti flap gap seals, boosting the Saratoga NX’s cruise speed about 12 knots.  Last but not least, the Saratoga NX features an all-new, modernized paint scheme.
