iPads With ForeFlight App Approved For All Part 135
Operations
ForeFlight has announced that Cutter Flight Management
(CFMI) of Phoenix, AZ, has received authorization from the FAA to
use iPads running ForeFlight Mobile during all phases of flight
while conducting air carrier operations.
The approval was finalized by issuance of OpSpec A061 for a
Class I EFB with Type A and B software. Cutter Flight Management
received the approval after a comprehensive six-month evaluation
period conducted on its aircraft fleet including the Citation
CE-560 series, BeechJet series, and King Air C90 series aircraft.
During the evaluation period, CFMI crews utilized the Apple iPad
32GB model with WiFi capabilities.
“Guidance from the local FAA representatives was
invaluable throughout the evaluation process” said Carlo
Sabbatini, Cutter Flight Management pilot and iPad EFB program
manager. “The collaborative relationship with ForeFlight was
also instrumental to the success of the program.”
“Cutter Aviation and Cutter Flight Management led the way
and cleared a path forward for operators seeking alternatives to
substantially more expensive electronic charting and approval
options”, said Tyson Weihs, Co-Founder of ForeFlight.
“Through the efforts of the Cutter Flight Management team,
they have demonstrated that an operator can ‘do it
yourself’ when seeking an OpSpec A061 approval to use iPads
in the cockpit, thus saving tens of thousands of dollars in the
process.”
ForeFlight says that operators choosing to use the Apple iPad
and solutions like ForeFlight Mobile can save a tremendous amount
of expense on their electronic charting, substantially enhance the
iPad’s capabilities with preflight planning tools and easily
accessible airport, A/FD and FBO information, and make happier
pilots and operations managers in the process.
