Walter Extra Still Has The Touch

A Newly Modified S-Model Is Put to the Test In Aerobatic Championships

The veteran world-class aerobatic championship pilot and founder of Extra Aircraft still has what it takes when it comes to performance-driven aerobatic flying. Extra took first place in the four-minute freestyle competition during the 54th annual German Championships held this weekend in Dinslaken, Germany.

"I really didn't know what to expect after not having flown in this competition for almost 10 years; I was flying a newly modified aircraft; and I only had one day of serious competition practice," said Walter Extra, founder of Extra Aircraft. "Combine that with knowing you are up against the top pilots and I feel pretty lucky."

Extra flew in a newly modified EA-300S, which is under development at the factory. With its recent win, the single-seat aircraft project is proving to be very successful in its beginning stages. Engineers are currently optimizing modifications that provide the competition pilot with better control, improved engine power, faster speeds and more vertical penetration. With an experimental Lycoming AEIO 580-X engine and an innovative single-cooler oil system installed, the aircraft also features the same aerodynamically redesigned cowling as the new EA-300LP.

"We are always trying to improve upon what a pilot can do in an aircraft," said Extra. "Thinking outside the 'aerobatic' box is the key. The word impossible is not in my vocabulary. We are always putting the limits to the test and ultimately hope to change them."
