The US Navy has commenced flight testing of the MQ-8C Fire Scout equipped with the Leonardo AN/ZPY-8 radar. “The AN/ZPY-8 radar significantly increases Fire Scout’s detection and tracking of targets. Raytheon Technologies to Train Afghan Air Force pilots

US Army Contract Valued Up To $145 Million

The US Army Contracting Command has selected Raytheon Intelligence & Space to train Afghanistan Air Force pilots under a three-year contract valued up to $145 million. Raytheon will conduct initial flight training for the US Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation. The Afghanistan Air Force students will go through flight school in third-party nations in Europe and the Middle East. Pilot Collides With Rising Terrain/Snow On Go-Around

The pilot was landing a wheel/ski-equipped airplane at a remote off-airport site in an area of mountainous, snow-covered terrain, and reported that she selected an area that was slightly uphill. During the final stages of the approach she felt uncomfortable with the approach, so she elected to go-around. During the go-around, she added full power and started a left turn. The airplane subsequently collided with an area of rising, snow-covered terrain, sustaining substantial damage to the right wing, and fuselage.

Ground Communication Outlet (GCO) An unstaffed, remotely controlled, ground/ground communications facility. Pilots at uncontrolled airports may contact ATC and FSS via VHF to a telephone connection to obtain an instrument clearance or close a VFR or IFR flight plan. They may also get an updated weather briefing prior to takeoff. Pilots will use four “key clicks” on the VHF radio to contact the appropriate ATC facility or six “key clicks” to contact the FSS. The GCO system is intended to be used only on the ground.
