No Surprise... Mark Baker Picks Up Where Fuller Leaves Off

Mark R. Baker, described by AOPA as a "a longtime general aviation (GA) pilot," has been named president and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). Baker is only the fifth AOPA president since the association’s founding nearly 75 years ago. A native Minnesotan, Baker, 55, became a pilot in his twenties and has logged more than 7,500 hours of flight time. The pilot community and his close flying friends are the reason he can be found at an airport or a seaplane base nearly every weekend.

In the first six months of 2013, passenger numbers of the Association of European Airlines’ (AEA) members increased by 2.9 million, a growth of 1.7% compared to the results of last year. Long-haul passenger traffic to and from Europe increased by 3%, while international short- and medium haul traffic (intra-Europe, Middle-East and North-Africa) posted 3.2% growth.

A B-1 'Lancer' went down Monday morning in a remote area of southeast Montana, but the good news is that all four crew members are reported to have ejected safely, but with some injuries. The aircraft was based out of Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD, and went down near Broadus. With a crew of two pilots and two weapon systems officers, the aircraft was believed to have been based out of Ellsworth's 28th Bomb Wing. The FAA has responded to an EAA petition, filed in April 2012, which would allow volunteer private pilots flying Young Eagles to be reimbursed for fuel consumed during sanctioned Young Eagles events -- with limits. A B-1B Lancer with the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota went down near Broadus, MT, during a routine training mission Aug. 19, the Air Force said in a statement. A crew of two pilots and two weapon systems officers were on board. All four members of the aircrew safely ejected with some injuries.

CSeries Airplane Starts Low-Speed Taxi Tests

Bombardier confirmed Friday that its first CSeries aircraft (FTV1) has commenced a series of low-speed taxi runs, having recently completed thrust reverser runs and stationary high-powered engine runs. FTV1 also completed the “aircraft in the loop”, or ACIL testing the previous week.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has announced an end to the year-long campaign to represent aircraft mechanics and related personnel at American Airlines. In a statement, Teamsters spokesman Bret Caldwell said "The Teamsters Union has determined that the recent announcement that the federal government will fight the proposed merger between US Airways and American Airlines places the workers at American Airlines in significant turmoil."
