Welcome to our Wednesday wrap up of the latest news from
AirVenture, 2012. The rains finally came to Oshkosh, and the day
dawned grey, promising off-and-on showers through the day. But the
less than perfect weather did not dampen the spirits of those who
came to Wittman Field at mid week, and the attendance was robust,
if not record breaking.

As our readers know, I am not shy about pointing out the dismal
failures in aviation management and marketing. I do this to
stimulate change which is good for our industry. On the other end
of the spectrum, I thoroughly enjoy pointing out good examples.
Nearly 40 Countries Now Have Certified The Light Jet
Embraer has received Type Certification (TC) from Australia's
Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), for the Phenom 300 light
jet to operate in the country. First certified in December 2009 by
Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency (Agencia Nacional de
Aviacao Civil - ANAC) and the FAA, the Phenom 300 is now accepted
in almost 40 countries.
New Products Bring Affordable Aircraft-Specific Devices To
Operators, Trainin Organizations
Beech King Air C90GTx and Piper Meridian pilots can now take
advantage of Redbird training devices. The company announced
Wednesday that is has delivered aircraft-specific Advanced Aviation
Training Devices for those two airplanes.
Diamond Aircraft is expanding its sales and service network with
the appointment of Diamond Regional Distribution Centers in
northern California and the central U.S. states of Minnesota,
Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota.
PC Aero, a German design and engineering company, announced the
introduction of the Elektra One at their exhibit Tuesday. The
aircraft is intended as a technology demonstrator to show what a
purpose built electric aircraft can accomplish.

Daher-Socata is celebrating its 100th anniversary at Oshkosh
with the display of a replica of the Morane-Saulnier Type L, an
iconic design representative of the early years of the company.
An Elegantly Simple Solution To An Older-Airplane Problem
If you fly an airplane with manual flaps where you have to reach
down to pull the flap handle, this is a must have for you. Bill
Berle has developed a very simple solution to an age old aviation
problem.
The SMA SR305-230E diesel engine for general aviation,
developing 230 shaft horsepower (SHP), was certified by the
European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) on January 24, 2011. The
SR305-230E logged 2,500 hours of ground and flight testing for this
certification program. Based on the results of these tests, SMA
guarantees Time Between Overhauls (TBO) of 2,000 hours, plus
excellent dispatch reliability right from service entry, which is
scheduled for early 2012.

Surprise Announcement Is Sad... But The Transitions Seems To Have Gone Off Rather Well
It came as a surprise... and a sad one at that. Mid-morning Tuesday, EAA Communication Boss Dick Knapinski put the word out that there was to be an unscheduled announcement at the Brown Arch on the grounds of Wittman Field... the rumor mill went into over-drive but the prevalent story was that Tom was ready to hand ALL the reins over to new EAA President and CEO, Rod Hightower.
Oshkosh, one week a year, is a microcosm of the world... a massive group of small unique associations and groups all dedicated to a common cause... and doing their own thing in the process. From the Warbird gang to the aerobatic folks to the ultralight types to the folks that keep the Flightline running, it is an eclectic and delightful exercise in human interaction.

Officials ASAP In Response To Attack On Aviation Industry
Leaders from seven aviation industry organizations sat together
at the EAA Welcome Center on Wednesday afternoon to discuss
critical concerns on the Federal and State legislative fronts that
were consistently referred to as some of the greatest threats the
aviation industry has ever faced.
The fact that the FAA has been temporarily crippled begs the
question “Could general aviation survive without FAA
oversight as we currently know it?” Looking around the
landscape for a comparable surrogate finds the Light Sport Aircraft
category doing quite well left to its own devices.

Market
In a sign that things may be picking up a bit in the aviation
industry, Lycoming's vice president and general
manager Mike Kraft said at an AirVenture press briefing Monday
that the company is seeing increased orders from OEM manufacturers
and a measureable upturn in general aviation. Kraft also stated
that Lycoming now has over 100 authorized service centers in the
USA, Canada, and certain Pacific Rim countries.

Jumps Into The Open-Architecture Pool With Aspen, Honeywell,
Jeppessen, Others
Avidyne announced Tuesday they are collaborating with Aspen
Avionics of Albuquerque and a growing number of parterns to
develop new products that are enabled to take advantage of
Aspen’s new Connected Panel technology. The two companies
previously announced and are currently developing an interface
between Avidyne’s DFC90 digital autopilot and Aspen’s
EFD1000 flight display system.

NTSB Says Airplane Had "Likely" Suffered A 'Previously
Undocumented Propeller Strike'
That Lancaire which went down in March, 2010 in Hilton Head,
fatally injuring a man jogging on the beach during the emergency
landing, turns out to have likely suffered damage to its propeller
and crankshaft sometime before the accident, according to the
NTSB's probable cause report.
Signing Copies Of 'Together We Fly: Voices From the DC-3' At
AirVenture
Julie Filucci was joined by former Cessna CEO Jack Pelton on a
rainy Wednesday morning at AirVenture to sign copies of her new
book "Together We Fly: Voices From the DC-3." Pelton wrote the
forward for the book
Gyroplanes have always sat at the back of the bus at AirVenture,
but manufacturers are making an increased showing at
AirVenture, and their sophistication and appeal are also
growing.
One LSA, One Workhorse Twin Coming From The Former SSR
There seems to be a lot of GA activity in the Czech Republic, at
least in the LSA segment of the market anyway. Tomark Aero has
introduced a new 2-place light sport aircraft. The aircraft is all
metal with side-by-side seats, dual controls, a vertical rising
canopy and fixed landing gear.
