Cassini Scientists Rethinking Titan

NASA and the European Space Agency became fascinated with Saturn's moon, Titan, after analyzing the data from Voyager's flyby in 1980 and 1981. That's when they discovered the moon's dense atmosphere, made mostly of methane. Why, they wondered, at temperatures prevalent on Titan, doesn't the methane fall from the sky like rain? Perhaps there was a ocean of methane on the surface.

American Bonanza Society And AOPA Team To Resolve Spar Web Cracking Problem

How serious is the Beechcraft Bonanza-Baron spar web cracking problem? AOPA and the American Bonanza Society (ABS) are working together to find out. Two experienced aerospace structures engineers have been contracted to determine what causes the cracks in the carry-through structure, bulkhead flanges, and fuselage skins. And more importantly, data are being collected to determine what are the real safety issues and if the "cure" is worse than the problem.

Number Three Airline To Post $1.65 Billion Losses

No one's exactly sure why Igor Yelfimov was standing so close to the engine of an Air Astana 737-700 at Moscow's Sheremetyevo-1 Airport Tuesday. Yelfimov won't be providing any answers. When the crew of the Kazak airliner started up the engines, Yelfimov was sucked into one of the turbines and instantly killed.

Battery Glitch

The launch of NASA's Aura spacecraft atop a Boeing Delta II rocket was scrubbed Wednesday because of an issue with one of the two batteries on the second stage of the Delta II launch vehicle. At approximately three minutes before the scheduled liftoff time, as the batteries were being transferred to internal power, the battery current level dropped below prescribed limits, triggering a launch hold.

Aircraft Touring US As Part Of Airline's 75th Anniversary

This week, as part of their 75th anniversary celebration, Delta Air Lines will fly their completely restored Douglas DC-3 aircraft to Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). The historic DC-3 will land at BWI at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14. The aircraft, while parked at Gate C-10, will be visible to the public from the BWI Observation Gallery, located on the upper level of the BWI Airport terminal, between Concourses B and C.

Eighth Series Of Weather Radar Tests July 15 - 18

The United States Army, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Lincoln Laboratory, the FAA and the EPA will conduct a series of trials, Canadian River 8, to verify the technical readiness of an early warning system (Homeland Defense Chemical Biological Umbrella or HDCBU) for aircraft aerosol release events. This test will be conducted in the vicinity of Oklahoma City on July 15 to 18 from 0400 to 0900 daily.

Johnson Wax Carnauba S-38 Headed to Oshkosh

A special airplane built in the 1990s to help a son retrace his father's path made in the 1930s will be on display throughout the week of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2004, July 27-August 2 at AeroShell Square. The Johnson Wax Carnauba is a replica of the Sikorsky S-38, designed in the late 1920s and was used by Herbert F. Johnson on his expedition to Brazil in search of a reliable source of Carnauba palms, a key ingredient of the family products. The replica was commissioned by the late Sam Johnson to recreate his dad's epic 1935 flight. Sam, who passed away recently, made a wonderful documentary, "Carnauba: A Son's Memoir," detailing the building of the amphibious airplane and recreating his father's flight.

Victims' Families Allege Cover-Up

As the eight-year anniversary of the TWA 800 crash approaches, the first piece of wreckage that separated from the plane is missing. Navy divers located and recovered this piece, which left the plane at apparent supersonic speeds, but the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) failed to list it in their official debris field map.

Korean Supersonic Trainer Put Through The Wringer

The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) recently began high angle-of-attack (AOA) flight testing on the T-50 Golden Eagle, a supersonic jet trainer being developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) with technical assistance from Lockheed Martin.

AOPA Fights Residential Development At Long Beach Airport

AOPA has launched another salvo in the ongoing battle to protect Long Beach Daugherty Field (LGB) from an incompatible housing development. In letters to the Long Beach Economic Development Commission and Airport Advisory Commission, AOPA said no safety review had been conducted of the Southern California development.

"The committee has recommended that NASA keep its options open, that NASA should not preclude a space shuttle servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope at this point in time." Source: Louis Lanzerotti, a consultant for Bell Laboratories and Lucent Technologies who chairs the National Research Council committee on the Hubble Space Telescope. He was quoted in the Houston Chronicle. The NRC committee wants NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe to reconsider his decision to scrub a planned repair/replenishment mission to the space telescope. In the wake of the Columbia tragedy, O'Keefe deemed such a mission "too risky."
