FAA Awards Two-Year Contract Extension For WAAS

Raytheon Will Provide Support To Improve System Reliability

The FAA has awarded a two-year contract extension by the to Raytheon to continue support services on the Wide Area Augmentation System being deployed across the country. WAAS is designed to replace ground-based navigation equipment with a satellite-based system, thus providing greater coverage and operational flexibility. WAAS allows GPS to meet performance and safety standards for en route and terminal operations, while non-precision approaches and approaches with vertical guidance benefit from the system’s enhanced capability.

Michael Prout, vice president of Security and Transportation Systems for Raytheon's Network Centric Systems business said "Raytheon has been the FAA's prime contractor for WAAS since the system was commissioned for operational use in the United States in 2003. The contract marks another milestone in the continuing partnership between Raytheon and the FAA to improve safety and efficiency for pilots."

The WAAS coverage area includes the continental United States, Alaska, Canada and Mexico. The $30.1 million dollar contract extends Raytheon’s responsibility through September 2013. Raytheon will be working to improve service reliability and availability by increasing the coverage area through certain system enhancements.
