Passenger Who Had Been Told She Was Too Large To Fly Passed Away In Hungary

The husband of a woman who was denied boarding on multiple airlines allegedly because of her weight and medical condition has quietly settled a lawsuit with Delta, KLM Royal Dutch, and Lufthansa airlines.

The New York Daily News reports that Janos Soltesz had flown with his wife Vilma to a vacation home in their native Hungary in 2012. But on when they tried to return to New York, Vilma, who weighed 407 pounds and had a partially-amputated leg, was denied travel by several airlines after being issued boarding passes and in some cases even being on the plane.

The couple had bought two tickets each way for the obese woman. The report says she began feeling ill in Hungary, but doctors there cleared her to fly back to the U.S. Then, Janos says, began a "wild goose chase" to get Vilma back to New York. She eventually passed away in Hungary.

Janos Soltesz sued Delta, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and Lufthansa for the wrongful death of his wife. Her doctor said her medication needed to be adjusted when she returned to the U.S., but she did not make it back before passing away.

Soltesz's suit asked for approximately  $6 million. The suit was reportedly settled quietly last month, according to court documents, for an undisclosed sum. No comments about the suit were made by either party.
