Flight 800's Final Run

TWA 747 Wreckage Moving to Virginia

If nothing else, it's a testament to tenacity: the 747-100 that was once TWA Flight 800 is mostly complete, reconstructed partly as investigation, partly as exercise, in a huge hangar in Calverton (NY), on Long Island.

All 230 people aboard the airliner died on July 17, 1996, when the big bird exploded and fell into the ocean near East Moriches (NY), not far from where the reconstruction is currently housed.

Now it is to be deconstructed once again, to move to George Washington University in Ashburn (VA), where it is to be used for NTSB training.

It should all be in Virginia the week before Christmas. The reconstruction of the reconstructin should go a lot faster than the first reconstruction, which has taken years. The second reconstruction should be complete by Valentine's Day.

It is expected to become the premiere such exhibit in the world, to be used by investigators from all over the world.
