Piper Archer Down In The English Channel

Prominent U.K. Businessman Fatally Injured, Wife Survives

A rented Piper Archer flown by U.K. businessman Ian Dickinson went down in the English Channel Saturday, resulting in the fatal injury of the 79-year-old pilot. Dickinson's wife Ann-Marie reportedly attempted to pull him from the sinking airplane, but was unsuccessful. She was picked up by a passing Russian cargo ship, and treated for exposure and hypothermia.

The accident occurred in French territorial waters, and the French Navy had taken the lead in the search for the airplane. The London Daily Mail reports that the search was called off Sunday.

Dickinson and his wife had departed Lee-on-Solent, Hampshire to return home to Alderny in the Channel Islands when the accident occurred. Mrs. Dickinson said the plane flipped over after impacting the water 25 miles off the coast of Guernsey.

Christelle Haar, from the Maritime Prefecture in Cherbourg, France, told the paper that the accident was under investigation by the French police.
