Powrachute + Ilmor Means New Power

By ANN Correspondent John Ballantyne

Powrachute is a leading developer of powered parachutes.

Ilmor is known for racing engines.

A joint project with Ilmor Engineering, Inc. has an in-line three cylinder, four cycle, 100 horsepower Ilmor driving a Powrachute Pegasus.

This is not for sale, yet. Nevertheless, it attracted a lot of attention at EAA Air Venture. No other powered parachute is driven by 100 horsepower.

Ilmor Engineering, Inc. provided the unusual UA Hornet powerplant. It has fuel injection, individual cylinder coil ignition systems, dry sump lubrication with 5.5 quarts of oil in the tank and water/oil heat exchanger. The engine management system includes automatic control of fuel and ignition timing from -10C to +80 from sea level to 20,000 feet. Ilmor is known for racing engines.

For 154 pounds, installed weight they include integrated gearbox and wet clutch. The 2.393 reduction in crankshaft rpm results in a prop speed of 3,300. Low propeller speeds are usually associated with lower noise operations. It can burn auto or AV gas and is fuel injected.

No one wanted to speculate about the cost of this impressive engine. We will have to wait to see if Powrachute and Ilmor marry and begin proliferating.
