United Spinoff Makes First Trip From Chicago

The signs in the terminal at O'Hare made it clear something big was going on. "Welcome Ted" banners adorned the arrival area as United Airline's three-month old low-cost carrier, Ted, debuted in United's hometown of Chicago Monday, with its inaugural flight from O'Hare to Tampa.

"We are thrilled to have begun our Ted service out of Chicago," said Sean Donohue, Ted's vice president. "Ted has been well-received in Denver and Washington (DC) and we know that our Chicago customers will respond with the same enthusiasm."

Ted is based at United's Denver hub. It seems to be going over well with the flying public. Airline executives say flights were 86-percent occupied during Ted's first 90 days of operation, far exceeding expectations.
