First Flight: Embraer Phenom 100's PWC PW617F

Pratt & Whitney Canada's PW617F engine, selected to power the Embraer Phenom 100 very light jet (VLJ), has successfully completed its maiden flight on P&WC's Boeing 720 flying test bed (FTB), marking a significant milestone in its development program.

The four-hour maiden flight achieved 20,000 feet and included a number of tests to assess the engine capabilities. Subsequent flights characterized the engine up to 41,000 feet.

"The engine performed flawlessly and exceeded our expectations," said Dan Breitman, vice president - Turbofan Development, P&WC.

Featuring a dual-channel Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC), the PW617F was chosen by Embraer to power the Phenom 100 in May 2005 and engine design work began in July 2005. P&WC's new PW600 engine series offers a step change in performance, cost and durability. Designed with a 50 percent reduction in parts count, the PW600 series incorporates the latest technologies while offering optimum value to operators.

PW617F certification is expected in the fourth quarter of 2007.
