Affordability Priority For F-35 Program

Bogdan: Progress Has Been Made, But There Is A Long Way To Go

Affordability remains the priority for the F-35 Lightning II joint strike fighter, the Pentagon's program executive officer for the Defense Department's most expensive procurement told Congress Wednesday. Air Force Lt. Gen. Christopher C. Bogdan told the Senate Armed Services Committee's air-land subcommittee that the program has made progress, but he acknowledged it is enormously complicated and has a ways to go.

A consortium of Washington-based organizations will soon submit the final section of a proposal to site an unmanned aircraft system research and testing facility in central Washington. If successful, the proposal to the FAA will result in the agency naming the Pacific Northwest Unmanned Aerial Systems Flight Center as one of six U.S. testing facilities later this year.

Block 45 Upgrades Will Extend Airplanes Life 'For Decades'

Known as "The Mighty War Wagon" of the Air Force, the KC-135 Stratotanker has proven to be the core aerial refueling capability for the Air Force for more than 50 years. With the help of the 418th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards, along with a multitude of testers, the KC-135 Block 45 test team recently completed a series of tests in April to help extend the aircraft's service life for decades.

The United States Navy has declared an updated MH-60S "Sierra" operational flight trainer (OFT) as ready-for-training at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island near San Diego, California. Chandler Wobble A small motion in the Earth's rotation axis relative to the surface, discovered by American astronomer Seth Carlo Chandler in 1891. Its amplitude is about 0.7 arcseconds (about 15 meters on the surface) with a period of 433 days. It combines with another wobble with a period of one year, so the total polar motion varies with a period of about 7 years. The Chandler wobble is an example of free nutation for a spinning non-spherical object.
