Carter Aviation Technologies announced they unofficially broke the Mu-1 barrier in flight-testing Friday morning. Unfortunately, the aircraft suffered a hard landing in an afternoon flight test, causing extensive damage to the airframe. The crew escaped without injuries.

AIAA Applauds House Action on NASA Appropriation

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) today applauds the U.S. House of Representatives for passage of HR 2862, the Science, State Commerce and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2006, setting the funding levels for NASA for FY06. The bill calls for a NASA funding level of $16.5 billion, $275 million more than the FY05 funding level, and $15 million more than the FY06 budget request.

"Mr. Allen, the only airplane I ever built had rubber bands on it." Source: Former Boeing CEO Malcom Stamper, when asked by his predecessor, Bill Allen, to come aboard for the 747 project. Chronicled by Rob Serling in his book on Boeing, Stamper accepted Allen's challenge and went on to build not only the world's biggest commercial airplane, but the world's biggest factory in which it was assembled. Stamper went west earlier this week. He died Tuesday of prostate cancer. He was 80.
