Jeppesen Introduces Web-Based Crew Fatigue Risk Assessment Service

Predicts Fatigue Levels For Airline Crew Members

A web-based service for quickly assessing predicted fatigue levels while determining airline crew schedules has been released by Jeppesen. The online Jeppesen Crew Fatigue Assessment Service is available to airlines of all sizes and represents the latest in a series of solutions from Jeppesen to help the commercial aviation industry prevent and mitigate fatigue risk in crew operations.

The Jeppesen Crew Fatigue Assessment Service allows airlines to submit their crew schedules for analysis using scientific prediction models such as the Boeing Alertness Model. Through a simple web interface, subscribers to the service – typically crew scheduling departments and safety departments at airlines – are able to upload the crew schedules for evaluation by Jeppesen, receiving both overall statistics and detailed fatigue assessment reports within minutes.

The upload process can be automated and integrated with most commercial aviation scheduling solutions available for operators. The scientific results are used by airlines to identify fatigue risk in all steps of the crew management process, including avoidance of crew scheduling patterns that enhance the risk of fatigue. The web-based service also coordinates with the performance results of an airline’s Fatigue Risk Management System.

“Providing Fatigue Risk Management tools online for airline operators now makes it possible to apply knowledge gained from sleep science research to crew planning and operations in a quick and cost-efficient manner,” said Tim Huegel, director, Jeppesen Portfolio Management, Aviation. “We believe that the web-based Jeppesen Crew Fatigue Assessment Service contains unprecedented fatigue risk analysis capabilities. This new web-based service, combined with a user-friendly interface that works with Boeing Alertness Model prediction functionality, provides a unique solution that promotes and enhances overall safety for the airline crew industry.”

The new Crew Fatigue Assessment Service compliments other Jeppesen services that help airlines mitigate the effects of crew fatigue. The Jeppesen Crew Management System suite includes crew pairing, rostering, tracking and day-of-operation disruption management functions. Jeppesen crew planning products interface and provide optimization functions for Boeing Alertness Model and other industry alertness models that make use of the Common Alertness Prediction Interface system for crew planning. This interface provides essential information for an operator’s safety management system.
CrewAlert, a related Apple iPhone mobile App by Jeppesen, makes it possible for schedulers and crew members to more easily integrate sleep science principles. The iPhone App also collects actual alertness data to be used for improving Fatigue Risk Management System operations and to improve modeling for crew schedules.
