Aero-Alert: Garmin Issues Nav Alert!

Pilots Flying Garmin 530, 430 Warned Not To Fly DME Arc's With v5.03, v4.03 Software

REAL TIME UPDATE - 1000 EST. The following Navigation Alert was issued yesterday, March 4, by Garmin International:

AFFECTED PRODUCTS

  • .All units with Main Software Version 5.03* as listed below:
    • GNS 530, GNS 530 TAWS, GNS 530A, GNS 530A TAWS, GPS 500,
      GPS 500 TAWS
  • All units with Main Software Version 4.03* as listed below:
    • GNS 430, GNS430A, GNC 420, GNC 420A, GPS 400

This Alert rescinds Garmin Service Bulletin # 0507 and # 0508 (*These software versions have been shipping from Garmin in new units and repaired units between February 11, 2005 to March 2, 2005)

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED

  • Do NOT fly DME ARC procedures using GPS in the affected products.
  • Notify all pilots who may have an affected product.
  • Contact your Garmin Service Center for corrective action.

DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE

Incorrect navigational information could be provided while flying a DME ARC procedure using GPS guidance. In addition, the DME ARC as seen on the moving map display may also provide an inaccurate depiction.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

GNS 530, GNS 530A, GPS 500 (non-TAWS) Products

Revert to Main Software Version 5.02 or version 4.00 or load version 5.04 (expected availability by 3/31/05). Use of 5.02 or 4.00 will eliminate GDL 69/69A functionality.

GNS 530 TAWS, GNS 530A TAWS, GPS 500 TAWS Products

Revert to Main Software Version 5.02 or load version 5.04 (expected availability by 3/31/05). Use of 5.02 will eliminate GDL 69/69A functionality.

GNS 430, GNS 430A, GNC 420, GNC 420A, GPS 400 Products

Revert to Main Software Version 4.02 or load Main Software Version 4.04 (expected availability by 3/31/05). Use of 4.02 will eliminate GDL 69/69A functionality.

Additional instructions will be available via service bulletin as new/corrected software (version 4.04 and 5.04) is available.
