Model Airplane Flyers Say Superfund Site Ideal For New Airpark

A Great New Use For An Old Landfill

It's not often you hear of a plan to turn something no one wants in their backyard, into something that could help promote aviation in children of all ages -- which is why ANN was heartened to learn of one R/C flying club's efforts to turn an old landfill into a new park for their hobby.

The New Hampshire Flying Tigers were expected to go before the Londonberry, NH town council Tuesday night, to give their pitch for converting part of an unused landfill -- and current Superfund site -- into an airstrip for radio-controlled model plane enthusiasts.

The Associated Press reports that if the council gives its approval, model aircraft could be using the field by the end of summer.

By opting to use the free land under the government's Superfund program for hazardous waste sites, club president Richard Bono says members can use money set aside to purchase land to instead plant grass, add picnic tables, and a patio -- in essence, turning what was once an old landfill into something beautiful... an airport, albeit a 1/10 scale one.

Sounds pretty aero-eco-cool to us.
