CAP Locates Missing Seawind Near Danville, VA

Pilot Has Not Been Identified

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 04.12.07 2010 EDT: Search crews have located the wreckage of a Seawind experimental amphibian that was reported missing after it failed to arrive at its destination Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say the aircraft dropped from radar coverage just before 4:30 PM Wednesday, after departing from Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina. The search began several hours later, but was called off early Thursday morning due to strong storms in the area.

The wreckage was found in a mulch field, near the North Carolina-Virginia border and within 20 feet of Farmer Lake. The pilot, who was killed in the accident, has not been positively identified.

1215 EDT: Aero-News has learned Civil Air Patrol crews are searching for a missing Seawind experimental amphibian in the vicinity of Caswell County, NC.

An FAA spokesperson told the Danville Register Bee the plane disappeared from radar approximately 15 miles south of the city. The plane was flying from Wilmington, NC and was due to arrive at Danville (VA) Regional Airport Wednesday afternoon.

CAP spokesman Eugene Jackson states the airplane (file photo of type, above) had one person onboard.

FAA records show a registration change is pending for the aircraft, N666AC. It was built in 2000.

ANN will continue to follow this story.
