Iowa Man Injured By Moving Helo Tail Rotor

Octogenarian's Face Slashed, But Injuries Reportedly 'Not Life Threatening'

An 80-year-old man from Tabor, IA, was injured Wednesday when he was hit by the still-moving tail rotor of a helicopter. Authorities say they are not sure if Robert Smith walked in to the rotor, or tripped and fell.

Pilot Larry Inman, a friend of Smith's son Brett, had just landed the small helo on the Smith's property, according to the Omaha World-Herald. He said he was sitting in the cockpit talking to Brett when the elder Smith walked behind the aircraft. Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope said "they felt the thump of the blade hitting him and saw what happened."

Smith was transported by a medical helicopter to Creighton University Medical Center. He was transferred to Nebraska Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.
