Atlantis Won't Launch As Early As Hoped

Why? Because The Lighting Is Wrong

The space shuttle Atlantis won't launch a day early. That's the word from NASA... as the space plane is being made ready for liftoff on August 27.

There was talk of sending Atlantis into orbit a day early, so ground crews could take advantage of better lighting conditions to photograph the launch vehicle in detail... part of the post-Columbia system of checks to make sure there's no fatal damage to the orbiter from falling debris like tank insulation foam.

But, as it turns out... the light on August 26th won't work in illuminating the areas engineers really want to see. So it's back to the 27th... still one day earlier than the original launch window.

That way... the mission won't conflict with a planned Russian Soyuz launch to the station in September. Atlantis will carry to the ISS new solar panels to help power the station... the first new building components to be delivered to the ISS since the February 2003 loss of Columbia.
