Pilot Safe After F-16 Bailout In California

Reported Engine Failure Over Owens Lake

The pilot of a California Air National Guard F-16 is safe... although probably a little shaken up... after ejecting from his plane Friday afternoon over a remote area northeast of Los Angeles.

Media reports indicate the as-yet-unidentified male pilot reported engine failure before popping out of the fighter. The plane impacted near the Owens Lake area, a dry lakebed used for military training runs.

Two ANG officials told the Associated Press search and rescue teams from China Lake Naval Air Station recovered the uninjured pilot.

Owens Lake lies due east of the Fresno headquarters of the CANG, over the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The cause of the crash in under investigation.
